The California Department of Education has released a number of grant opportunities to support educational efforts in California. A summary of these opportunities is below:
- School Nutrition Programs: Open to local educational agencies. Required Eligibility Criteria: Public and private nonprofit schools (including public charter schools) are eligible to participate. Also eligible are public and private, nonprofit licensed residential child care institutions (e.g., group homes, juvenile halls, orphanages). Funding Description: Funding supports five school meal and milk programs to assist schools, districts, and other nonprofit agencies in providing nutritious meals and milk to children at reasonable prices or free to qualified applicants. The five programs are the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), School Breakfast Program (SBP), Seamless Summer Feeding Option (SSFO), Special Milk Program (SMP), and State Meal Program (STMP). - Child and Adult Care Food Program: Open to institutions of higher education, local educational agencies, nonprofit organizations, other organizations or agencies. Required Eligibility Criteria: Public, private nonprofit, and private for-profit agencies; agencies licensed or approved to provide nonresidential day care to children or chronically impaired adults. Public or private nonprofit emergency shelters may also be eligible for subsidy. Funding Description: The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a state and federally funded program that provides funding to licensed child care centers, adult day care centers, and organizations that sponsor day care homes to ensure participants receive nutritionally adequate meals and snacks while in care. profile.asp?id=3615 - Specialized Secondary Programs (SSP): Open to local educational agencies. Required Eligibility Criteria: The proposed program must be new to the school and serve students in at least two consecutive grades 9-12. All California public high schools including continuation high schools, county offices of education, consortium of LEAs, and direct-funded charter schools, are eligible to apply for SSP planning grants. Only those high schools and LEAs that received 2013-14 SSP planning grants are eligible to apply for implementation grants. Funding Description: Specialized Secondary Programs (SSP) provides start-up funds for the establishment of new, advanced specialized programs in California high schools. The programs are expected to develop new standards-based model curriculum that promote advanced, in-depth study of a targeted content area. The Legislature intends for SSP to benefit the state economy by having schools located in close proximity to related industries. Funding is available for planning and implementing new programs. profile.asp?id=3614 - CalWORKs: California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids 2013-14: Open to local educational agencies. Required Eligibility Criteria: Funding is restricted to public school adult education programs and regional occupational centers and programs that serve welfare recipients. Funding is allocated to counties based on the number of CalWORKs clients in each county. Funding Description: CalWORKs funding is only for public school adult education programs and regional occupational centers and programs. It provides education and training to: (1) prepare CalWORKs eligible clients for entry level employment; (2) assist employed clients receiving subsidies or supportive services to advance toward higher employment and self-sufficiency; and (3) divert CalWORKs eligible clients into short-term education and training programs leading to employment.
